You must make sure you have everything ready and your body is in the best possible shape. While preparing for LASIK eye surgery may not be quite as difficult, there are several things you need to prepare for before LASIK.

You definitely need to stop wearing your contact lenses in the weeks leading up to your consultation before LASIK. Since the surgery is dependent on the shape and measurement of your cornea you must let it regain its shape. Lenses sometimes reshape the cornea themselves, causing problems with LASIK. Here are some FDA recommendations based on your contact lenses:

Soft contact lenses should be removed and not worn for at least two weeks prior to your LASIK evaluation.

Rigid gas permeable lenses should be removed and not worn for at least three weeks prior to LASIK evaluation.

Hard lenses should be removed and not worn for at least four weeks prior to LASIK evaluation.

When you meet the doctor to discuss LASIK eye surgery you should let him know a few things about yourself. Let the doctor know about any past or present medical and eye conditions as well as all medications you are taking or are allergic to. It is important that you disclose all of this to your doctor before deciding if LASIK is right for you.

After you’ve disclosed this personal information to the doctor, you should then discuss if you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Let him explain to you the risks, benefits, and alternatives of the surgery as well as what you can expect from beginning to end.

You should stop using any lotions, perfumes, or creams the day before the surgery as well as any makeup that may cause debris to get in the eye. The doctor may even request that you scrub and wash out your eyes for a good time before LASIK surgery to prevent the chance of any type of infection.

Finally, you should definitely arrange with a loved one for transportation to and from the LASIK surgery. Before LASIK surgery some doctors will arrange for you to take some medicine to help you relax that could impair your vision and reaction time. After LASIK surgery you may need a few days to recover your vision, hence the need to arrange for a drive home.

Natural Cleaning Products

The following is a list of non toxic cleaning products.
Baking soda-This is an all purpose cleaner and is very effective on glass coffee pots and glassware. It was dried in the sun, in the air or at the fireplace, or preserved using sugar, salty or sour liquids, oil or starches. Later, it was preserved using heat and eventually by using very low temperatures or ice.

When food hadn't been changed by mechanical or chemical methods, freezing or drying were the best and healthiest ways of preserving it. However, as soon as fresh food has been processed by industrial methods to become non-perishable, it loses a great part of its vital ingredients.

About 80 per cent of food in supermarkets is treated to increase shelf life or improve its appearance. When a natural product is processed, it loses its attractive appearance, taste and smell. So the chemical industry uses many substances to enhance them.

Many preserving additives can kill the bacteria present in food. Bacteria and human cells are very similar, both having their own metabolism and both highly sensitive to toxins. Therefore, we may assume that such additives could have a similar effect on human cells as they have on bacteria. But as long as there is no proof some additives are dangerous, they will continue to be used.

The human body isn't equipped with anything that could be used to detoxify the ever increasing quantity of foreign substances we consume. They remain somewhere in the body, where they may start to accumulate. These substances hinder metabolism as well as many other functions and little is known about what may happen when toxins come into contact with each other, producing cross-reactions.

In certain quarters these problems have been known for some time, but the food industry largely ignores the fact that such reactions could be detrimental to our health. Business comes before health.

Many people like to drink coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fizzy drinks or alcohol instead of water. Drinks containing caffeine stimulate the taste buds. They also stimulate digestive juices in the stomach, increase heartbeat and brain function. These reactions may last a few minutes or even several hours. Then the counter-reaction begins.

The coffee drinker gets nervous and sometimes shaky and sometimes depressive. Sleeplessness and depression are only two of the problems. Habitual coffee drinking can also be the cause of chronic migraines. Cola type drinks can also cause hyperactivity in children. Over the last fifty years the consumption of coffee and sweet drinks has increased massively. Because coffee and alcohol stimulate kidney function and water elimination, these drinks can dehydrate the body. Chocolate drinks can also provoke allergies which can cause loss of appetite. Moderation or elimination altogether is the best choice.

The Effect Of Free Radicals

Researchers have demonstrated a correlation between exposure to air pollution and the risk of developing certain respiratory disorders such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer.

The exact mechanisms remain unknown, but scientists believe there is a strong link between environmental exposures and the production of free radicals in the body. These highly reactive compounds can cause inflammation in the lungs and damage the tissue lining the lung walls.

To prevent free-radical formation, and the damage they can cause, avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, secondhand smoke and air pollution. Increase your intake of foods rich in antioxidants, especially organically grown vegetables and fruits. Antioxidants are also found in green tea and dark chocolate. As it turns out, the average person will experience at least one fracture at one time or another. One of the bones most likely to be broken is the radius of the arm, an injury commonly known as a wrist fracture.

Fortunately, the majority of wrist fractures do not require surgical intervention. In most cases, a plaster cast is used to immobilize the joint for six to eight weeks while the bone is allowed to heal. Although wearing a cast may seem simple enough, it can cause a number of problems.

Many patients require several weeks of intensive physical therapy to strengthen the muscles of the affected wrist and hand. In some cases, patients may not recover normal wrist flexibility or function for several months to a year.

Another relatively common treatment option is external fixation. The procedure involves embedding metal pins into the bone on either side of the fracture. The pins are then connected through the skin to an adjustable rod known as an external fixator, which remains outside the wrist. Since the device is cumbersome and a bit weighty, it tends to significantly limit the function of the affected hand.

A significant improvement in treatment can be achieved with the Micronail. This is a small titanium rod designed to be implanted completely inside the fractured bone of the wrist. The surgery is minimally invasive, requiring only a three-quarter inch incision in the skin. The Micronail sits inside the bone, so there's very little risk of irritation to surrounding tendons, muscles, and nerves.

In most cases, the surgery lasts less than an hour, and patients typically go home the same day, wearing a removable splint instead of a plaster cast. Afterwards, patients can expect to begin using the injured wrist in just one to two weeks.

While the Micronail implant isn't appropriate for every patient, it can be used in the treatment of a variety of wrist fractures.

BODY MASS INDEX

If you're concerned about your health you're probably aware of how important your Body Mass Index (BMI) is and the size of your waistline. Health and fitness experts agree that having a waist measurement above 37 inches for men and 32 inches for women increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, for example, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. Yet despite all the warnings, it seems that many peoples waistlines are rapidly increasing.

It's often said that it's harder to keep in shape once you hit your 40s and figures seem to bear this out. The over 45s are responsible for buying more than two thirds of the men's plus size clothing (waist size 37 inches and above) on sale in stores. However, younger men needn't be complacent. Research also reveals that there's an emerging market for larger sizes among their age group too.

You can calculate your BMI as follows.

Work out your height in metres and multiply the figure by itself.

Measure your weight in kilograms. There are 14 pounds in one stone and 2.2 pounds equals one kilogram.

Divide the weight by the height squared.

For example, if you are 1.6m tall and weigh 65kg the calculation would be

1.6 x 1.6 = 2.56. BMI would be 65 divided by 2.56 = 25.39.

Most people are either "apple or "pear" shaped. Whole body vibration training promises to make getting in shape easier than ever.

All you have to do is climb aboard a specially designed platform, which generates vibrations in the range of 35 to 50 Hertz. In response to the vibratory stimulation, your muscles reflexively contract and relax dozens of times per second, without your conscious effort.

Manufacturers of vibration platforms claim that by simply standing, sitting, or lying on the new-fangled exercise equipment for 10 minutes a day, users can work up a sweat while they increase their muscular strength, flexibility, and bone mass. Even better, manufacturers say the machines can shake off excess body fat and shimmy away unsightly cellulite.

Scientific research supports some, but not all, of these claims. Nonetheless, total body vibration training is showing all the signs of becoming the latest, greatest fitness craze.

Although several studies support the notion that whole body vibration can boost muscular strength and flexibility, there's less evidence to suggest that it can promote weight loss or reduce body fat. Most scientific studies performed to date have demonstrated modest, if any, reductions in body weight and fat mass, even after 24 weeks of regular use.

The greatest benefit of vibration training may lie in its potential to increase bone mass. The results of a 2004 study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research suggests that a training program that includes vibratory stimulus may reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.

POSITIVE THINKING

Busy lives, stressful schedules, poor diets, inadequate sleep, not enough down time and lack of energy. Sound familiar? With all there is to do in life, something has got to give, and often it's your fitness regime.

It can be challenging to find time to work out, but the long- and short-term health benefits make it a necessary aspect of achieving optimum health. Here are some tips to help you get back on the track to making positive changes:

Start small. We've all heard the advice to park farther away or take the stairs, because it works. Set a goal to take the stairs at work every other day.

Pace yourself at the gym. Everyone is there for the same reason, so don't be ashamed if you're going a little slower. Use light weights for strength training, and limit yourself to 2-10 minutes on the stationary bike when you first start out. You'll find that your stamina will quickly improve.

Take care of yourself. Wear the proper footwear, removable layers or light clothing, and avoid dehydration by drinking more water than you think you need.

Get encouragement. Join an exercise class, hire a personal trainer, or enlist a friend for morning walks. It's more fun if you don't go it alone.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants are nutrients that protect the body against the effects of chemicals called free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable chemicals that damage cell DNA in the body, destroy cells andcorrode cell membranes. This is the major cause of ageing and degenarative diseases. There are numerous ways in which free radicals can enter the body. By breathing in polluted air and cigarette smoke, by producing its own through stress and through every metabolic reaction involving oxygen.

To help protect your body against the damage caused by free radicals ensure that you maintain consistently high enough levels of antioxidants in order to neutralise the free radicals. The best food sources of antioxidants are strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, plums, broccoli, nuts, grains and some meats, poultry and fish.

In order to keep your antioxidant level consistently high enough, you should eat about 5 to 9
portions of fruit and veg a day. It's important that you keep this up every day and that you get
enough variety rather than eating the same foods every day. For many people this is very
difficult to do as it is unpractical. Therefore, taking an atioxidant supplement is very appealing and a quick, easy and affordable way to protect yourself.

THE "SECRET" OF SUCCESSFUL WIEGHT LOSS

We all know the “secret” of successful weight loss - eat less and exercise more. It's not always easy, but by adopting healthy eating habits and a regular exercise routine, you are sure to lose weight without depriving yourself of nourishing, satisfying food. And if you continue those good habits after you reach your goal, you will have an excellent chance of maintaining your desired weight. Here are some tips for successful weight loss.

Avoid artificial sweeteners and synthetic fat substitutes. They are unhealthy and not conducive to the development of good eating habits.
Dietary supplements or "fat-burning herbs" are usually just stimulants - don't rely on them. The pounds will surely return once you've stopped taking them.
Build lean body mass. Strength training burns excess calories and influences the way your brain regulates hunger, making you less susceptible to food cravings.
Pay attention to the mental and spiritual aspects of weight control. Use relaxation exercises - instead of food - to combat anxiety.
Accept your body. You may see it as less than perfect, but it is beautiful just the same.
And if you aren’t eating right consider supplementing the gaps in your diet. While a daily multivitamin and anti-oxidant won’t make up for poor food choices, they can help maintain nutrition during those times you can’t eat right.

A CANCER PROTECTIVE DIET

A healthy diet can help the body in its efforts to heal itself, and in some cases, certain foods can strengthen the immune system and lessen the risks of serious illness. Left untreated, it can lead to the development of acne-like pimples and visible blood vessels on the face. In severe cases, the skin around the nose swells and thickens, giving it a bulbous, bumpy appearance.

In approximately 60 percent of rosacea sufferers, the eyes are also affected. Signs and symptoms include swollen eyelids and bloodshot eyes that water, sting, and burn.

In spite of ongoing research, the exact cause of rosacea remains unknown. At one time or another, scientists have speculated that the condition might be caused by bacteria, skin mites, fungus, or a malfunction of the blood vessels underlying the skin, but so far, none of these theories has been proven.

There's some evidence to suggest that heredity could play a role. Many rosacea sufferers may have at least one relative with similar skin problems. People of European descent appear to be especially susceptible to the condition.

Rosacea is more common in women, but it tends to be more severe in men. While the condition may strike in the teens or early twenties, it's far more likely to occur later in life.

ASBESTOS CANCER -MESOTHELIOMA

Asbestos cancer or mesothelioma is a rare cancer which may affect the lining of the lungs and the abdominal cavity. Most mesotheliomas are caused by exposure to asbestos. It can take up to thirty years or more after the first exposure to asbestos for mesothelioma to be diagnosed. The disease occurs more often in men than women, probably due to an increased likelihood of exposure to asbestos and the risk also increases with age.

Asbestos is made up of a group of six fibrous minerals. These are amosite, chrysolite, crocidolite, treemolite, actinolite and anthophyllite. They occur naturally in soil and rocks in some areas and are resistant to heat and many chemicals. Asbestos is used for a wide range of goods including roofing material, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products and friction products in cars such as clutch and brake components. The new use of asbestos has been banned in many countries for a number of years.

Symptoms of the disease are shortness of breath, a persistent cough, chest pain and a loss of appetite coupled with weight loss. Treatment for mesothelioma varies, dependant on the location of the cancer, the stage of the disease, and the age and general health of the patient. Likely treatments can include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Sometimes, these treatments can be used in combination.

Although the small asbestos fibres cannot be detected by x-rays, the early signs of lung disease can. Other tests including lung and CAT scans can also be applied in detecting changes in the lungs. People exposed to lower levels of asbestos may also have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, but the risks are much smaller and can be difficult to measure.

ASBESTOSIS

Asbestosis is a non-cancerous, but chronic lung illness caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a natural material made up of tiny fibres which can lodge in the lungs and lead to a number of diseases. A significant exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and other non-malignant lung and pleural disorders. The risk involved depends on the duration, frequency, concentration and type of asbestos fibres. Exposure to asbestos often occurs by breathing contaminated air in workplaces that make or use asbestos or in the air
of buildings containing asbestos that are being demolished or renovated.

Diseases caused by asbestos exposure take a long time to develop. Many cases of asbestosis in asbestos workers can take 15 years or longer after the initial exposure to asbestos. Smoking also greatly increases the likelihood of lung cancer occuring in workers exposed to asbestos. The interaction between cigarette smoke and asbestos has been found to accelerate the chances of getting lung cancer. Studies have also suggested that breathing asbestos can increase the chances of cancers in other parts of the body - stomach, intestines, kidneys - but this is not certain.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

Everyone's entitled to feel a little stressed out or down in the dumps in the winter months, but a major mood change is cause for concern. It could be a symptom of a debilitating type of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short.

While the exact mechanism of SAD isn't fully understood, it's thought to be related to the shorter days and weaker sunshine of winter. In susceptible individuals, shorter, darker days can cause biochemical imbalances in the brain that lead to depression.

Women in their twenties and thirties are most likely to develop seasonal affective disorder. Symptoms often begin in late November or December, and may not let up until April or May.

People who live along northern latitudes, or in areas that are perpetually cloudy and overcast, are most commonly affected. Poor lighting conditions at home and at work also can contribute to seasonal affective disorder. If you live in a dark basement dwelling,or if you work in a gloomy, windowless building, you're at greater risk of developing SAD.

Signs and symptoms of the disorder range in severity, but they typically include feelings of sadness and social withdrawal. SAD sufferers frequently lose interest in their normal activities, and often avoid interacting with friends and family. Fatigue and excessive sleepiness are two of the most common symptoms. Some SAD sufferers are tempted to crawl into bed and stay there for the remainder of winter.

While seasonal affective disorder robs its victims of energy and enthusiasm, it can have the opposite effect on appetite. People with SAD often experience an overwhelming desire to eat, and they often crave starches and sweets. Eating cakes, biscuits, and other comfort foods may be a natural response to depression, since carbohydrate-rich foods can boost levelsof a mood-enhancing brain chemical called serotonin. Manyantidepressant drugs, including those used to treat seasonal affective disorder, work by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

In addition to prescription medicines, exposure to bright light can help alleviate symptoms of SAD. Light intensity, measured in units of lux, is typically greatest
outdoors in the sunshine. In fair weather, sunlight may be in the range of 5,000 to
20,000 lux, but it can reach a dazzling 100,000 lux on a sunny beach or snow-covered ski slope. Indoor light is far dimmer, ranging from 100 to 300 lux. Sitting in a sunbeam or taking a walk outdoors during the sunniest part of the day can help dissipate mild symptoms of the winter doldrums, but more light is necessary for the treatment of SAD.

Doctors often recommend phototherapy, or bright light therapy, for patients with seasonal affective disorder. When used as directed, phototherapy significantly reduces physical and emotional symptoms in approximately 80 percent of treated patients.

Phototherapy is a straightforward treatment .The patient simply sits in front of a specially designed lamp that emits bright light, ranging from 2,500 to 10,000 lux. Many SAD sufferers begin to feel better after their first treatment. For patients who are sensitive to phototherapy, symptoms can be resolved with a course that includes a single, 20-minute session each day. Patients whose symptoms are more resistant to treatment may require two 45-minute sessions daily.

Recent studies have suggested that in addition to bright light therapy, low doses of the dietary supplement melatonin may help alleviate SAD symptoms. While the preliminary findings are promising, more research is needed to determine the optimal dose and timing of the supplement.

Whether treatment includes prescription antidepressant medications, phototherapy, or both, exercise is an important part of the program. As a proven mood-booster, physical activity can reduce the severity of depressive symptoms. People with severe or debilitating symptoms of SAD should work with their doctor to design an effective treatment plan. If you've just got a mild case of the winter blues, on the other hand, a brisk walk in the sunshine might be all it takes to get you back on course.

BENEFITS OF ANTIOXIDANTS

As we age, we experience a gradual loss of brain cells which can affect the way we store and retrieve information. Difficulty in remembering details of recent events as well as a diminished ability to learn can be common as we get older. While memory loss from aging does not typically affect normal functioning, it can be bothersome. To help keep your memory strong as you get older, consider changing your diet and supplement routine.

Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Both help neutralize the damaging effects of free-radicals. Vegetables and fruits are the best sources of antioxidants, although tea and dark chocolate contribute as well. Cold-water fish, freshly ground flaxseed and walnuts provide omega-3s.
Avoid alcohol. The damaging effects of alcohol on the central nervous system is well known.
Take a multivitamin that contains B vitamins. The B vitamins folic acid, B6 and B12 are related to healthy cognitive function.

COMBATING REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY

Many repetitive strain injuries are caused by excessive extension of the wrists, like when you type on a computer keyboard for hours on end. One of the difficulties caused by carpal tunnel syndrome or other RSIs is that you have to avoid gripping objects tightly as well as avoiding flexing and extending your wrist. This makes it almost impossible to do any work with free weights and most weight machines. Here’s a checklist of what to do if you have such an injury.

First, consult your doctor if it's OK to try some resistance work as long as you don't grip a dumbbell or the handle of a weight machine tightly. For example, you should be able to use an upright weight machine with pads (called a pec deck) without holding on to anything, just by pushing with your forearms and elbows against the pads. That will allow you to get some chest work done. On some pec decks you can reverse your position, facing away from the pads. If you can get into that position, you can hold your arms horizontally, with your elbows bent, and push backwards on the pads with your elbows. You can work your rear deltoids and upper back in this manner.

You can put ankle or wrist weights around your wrists and do lateral raises for your shoulders. You can also do triceps extensions or kickbacks with the wrist weights and curls. The important points to remember are to keep your fingers open withyour
palm relaxed and to keep your wrist in a neutral position, neither flexed nor extended. You can also try using elastic bands for some resistance exercises.

Since your wrist needs rest, for now you will have to avoid all pulling and pressing exercises like rowing and bench pressing. A good approach would be to work with a trainer who can give you manual resistance with the proper precautions. Swimming may be OK, but again consult your doctor first. The great thing about swimming is that you can work your upper body muscles and get an aerobic workout at the same time without putting undue strain on your joints.

ORIGIN OF CALORIES

Many people try to forget about calories, others are obsessed with counting them, but where did the unit come from and why is food measured in calories?

Originally, a calorie is a measure of the amount of energy required to heat 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius. It was first used in engineering and physics, but eventually found its niche in nutrition, where it is used to measure the amount of energy food contains.

German physician Julius Mayer is credited for beginning a dialogue about food as an energy source. Before Mayer's time, people thought energy was God-given; they made no concrete connections between the food they ate and the energy on which their bodies ran.

A popular early nutrition text published in 1918 by Lulu Hunt Peters outlined 100-calorie portions of many foodstuffs and preached counting calories as a way to regulate weight.

BAN FOR JUNK FOOD ADS

Junk food ads during children's television programming in Britain will be banned under new rules announced by the country's broadcasting regulator.

The Office of Communication's rule affects commercials for food and drink products high in fat, salt and sugar. Officials said the measures, designed to help address Britain's obesity crisis, will reduce children's exposure to junk food ads by 41 percent, and cost broadcasters up to £40 million.

The rule, pending final approval, bans junk food advertising during children's programs and on children's television channels.

It also affects programs not normally considered child's fare -- "The Simpsons," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Friends" -- because they are watched by a large number of under-16 viewers. Normally, skin cells turnover is around twent eight days. However, when someone has psoriasis new skin cells appear in just four days. It's this rapid turnover of cells that causes the characteristic red scaly patches, topped with slivery scales to form on the skin. Most often the patches appear on the elbow, knees and scalp but they can appear anywhere on the body.

Itching and discomfort are a common problem for those with psoriasis. The word psoriasis comes from the Greek word psora meaning "itch". Many are embarassed about how their skin looks so will not expose it.

It's not clear what causes psoriasis. It can run in families and often follows infections, periods of stress or anything that damages the skin. Although it can't be cured psoriasis can be kept under control with creams or ointments.

Certain myths exist about psoriasis which are simply not true. For example, it is not contagious, it is not caused by poor hygiene and is actually very common.

Some people keep their psoriasis under control with acupuncture, homeopathy or herbal therapy. Zinc and essential fatty acids can also help.

LSD HELPED ALCOHOLISM
A University of Alberta researcher has found records that a single dose of the hallucinogenic drug LSD can be an effective treatment for alcoholism.

Dr. Erika Dyck has been unearthing some facts related to a group of pioneering psychiatrists who worked in Saskatchewan in the 1950s and 1960s.

One study conducted in 1962 and published in the Quarterly Journal for Studies on Alcohol resulted in 65 percent of the alcoholics in the experiment stopped drinking for at least 1.5 years after taking one dose of LSD in a clinical, nurturing environment.

"The LSD somehow gave these people experiences that psychologically took them outside of themselves and allowed them to see their own unhealthy behavior more objectively, and then determine to change it," said Dyck.

"Even interviewing the patients 40 years after their experience, I was surprised at how loyal they were to the doctors who treated them, and how powerful they said the experience was for them -- some even felt the experience saved their lives."

IMPROVING YOUR MEMORY

To help keep your memory strong as you age, consider supporting it through your diet. The following can help keep your brain healthy.

Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help counter oxidative stress, a process which can damage cells and may accelerate ageing. Fresh, organic vegetables and fruits, such as blueberries and foods rich in vitamins C and E, are the best dietary sources of antioxidants, although tea, especially green tea and dark chocolate can contribute as well.

Blueberries deserve special mention. Research has found that blueberries appear to improve motor skills and reverse age-related short-term memory loss, and may also protect the brain from stroke damage. The active components in blueberries are anthocyanin pigments - the protective compounds that make the berries blue and are responsible for their antioxidant potency. Add them to your cereal, salads, or eat as a snack.

Foods rich in vitamins C and E. These two vitamins have been shown to have protective effects against inflammation, which is linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Good sources of vitamin C include beans, oatmeal, citrus fruits, enriched pastas, fresh peas, rice bran and wheat germ. For vitamin E, increase your intake of spinach, sunflower seeds, wheat germ and whole grains.

IMPROVING YOUR HEART RATE
A moderate amount of exercise for 30 minutes on most days is good for your heart and your overall health. Your watch may remind you how long you've been working out, and a calendar can confirm how many days you've been to the gym. But, how do you know if you're exercising at a moderate pace? That's why knowing your target heart rate is so important.

Your target heart rate zone is 50 to 75 percent of your maximum heart rate, or how
much work your heart can handle. It's a good way to gauge how fit you are and whether you're working out at a moderate pace.

Exercise makes your heart stronger, so it doesn't need to beat as often. When you need to exercise more intensely to reach your target heart rate, it's a sign that you're becoming more fit.

If you exercise at your target heart rate for at least 30 minutes on most days, you may reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. It's important to check with your doctor if you're considering an exercise program. Your doctor may want to modify your target heart rate based on your situation. And, some medications, such as those for high blood pressure, may affect your heart rate.

If you're not currently active, start with a few minutes of activity every day. Then,
increase the amount of time that you exercise and pick up the pace -- but don't overdo it. If you hit a plateau, increase the intensity or length of your workouts. The
lower the intensity of the exercise, the longer you'll need to do it to get results.

Appropriate exercises can be walking briskly, bicycling, yoga, dancing and swimming are all moderate-intensity activities. But, doing any exercise that gets your heart pumping is a good place to start.

You can do a basic calculation to work out your heart rate. Your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. So, if you're age 40, for instance, your maximum heart rate would be 180 beats per minute.

Your target heart rate is calculated by multiplying your maximum heart rate by the
desired exercise intensity. For someone who is age 40 this would be -
180 X 50 % = 90 bpm
180 X 75 % = 135 bpm
So, your target heart rate zone is between 90 and 135 bpm.

To check your heart rate, stop exercising and find your pulse on your neck or wrist.
Then count the number of times your heart beats for 10 seconds-starting at 0, not 1. Multiply that number by six to get the beats per minute. Or, try the talk test. A good rule-of-thumb is to stay within an intensity level that allows you to hold a conversation while exercising.

BLOOD TEST FOR ALZHEIMERS DISEASE

British scientists say they are moving closer to finding a blood test that can detect the existence of Alzheimer's disease before it becomes symptomatic.

Scientists at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry report finding levels of two types of protein found in the blood can indicate an increased risk of having the disease.Tests found an increased level of those proteins was present only with patients suffering from the disease.

The researchers say their discovery might eventually lead to a blood test to diagnose the likelihood of developing the disease in later life.

RELIEF FROM SCIATICA

Pain or discomfort that runs from your lower back or hip, down through your buttocks and into the lower part of your leg could be a sign of sciatica, a condition that's often painful but rarely serious. Usually, it can be diagnosed and treated successfully.

Sciatica may feel dull, aching or burning. Sometimes it starts gradually, worsens at night and is aggravated by motion. It also can cause tingling, numbness or muscle weakness in the leg. The pain often results from pressure or irritation to the sciatic nerve, in the back of the leg. A displaced, or herniated, disc in the lower spine also may cause sciatica. This type of disc problem actually is quite common -- one out of every 50 people experiences it.

An exam by your doctor probably can determine if you have sciatica. He or she may check your reflexes, foot and leg strength, and flexibility. Blood tests, X-rays or MRI scans also may be recommended to help determine what's causing the condition.

Unless you have diabetes or nerve damage, apply cold to your lower back for the first day or so. Doing this for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, three to four times a day may help relieve the pain. Then, alternating heat and cold may be soothing. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if your doctor recommends it. Sciatica may disappear within six weeks of self-care. But, if the pain gets worse, making daily activities difficult, you should consult your doctor.

Certain exercises may help you to protect yourself from sciatica.
Stand tall. Line up your ears with your shoulders, align your shoulders with your hips and tuck in your buttocks. Bend your knees slightly, too.

Keep abdominal muscles strong. Lie down with your back on the floor. Put your hands behind your head and bend your knees. While pressing your lower back to the floor, lift your shoulders a few inches and then lower them. Repeat 10 to 20 times. Do one set a day.

Keep physically active. Walking and swimming are good exercises to keep yourself in shape without undue stress on your physique..

Lift properly. Bend your knees when lifting and lift with a straight back. Don't bend at the waist.

Avoid sitting or standing for long periods. If you need to be seated for a while, take regular breaks to stand and walk around. If you must be on your feet, put one foot on a footrest while standing. Switch feet throughout the day. When LDL cholesterol is oxidized, it sticks
to the lining of blood vessels, causing them to clog up.

Analysis showed that the extracted juice contained more
than 40% of the original polyphenol content from the
whole berry, along with 50% of the original flavonoids
and 70% of the vitamin C.

ALLEVIATING THE PAIN OF SHINGLES

Chickenpox is generally an affliction of childhood, but the virus responsible for the infection can plague some people for the rest of their lives. When it strikes later in life, the result is a painful condition called shingles.

After a bout with chickenpox, the virus isn't removed from the body. Instead, it retreats to the nerves surrounding the spinal cord, where it can remain dormant for many years. A healthy immune system helps to keep the virus in check, preventing it from attacking a second time. With the advance of age or illness, however, the immune system can become less effective.

With the body's defenses weakened, the chickenpox virus can return. As it moves away from the spinal cord along nerve fibres, it leaves a trail of blisters on the overlying skin. The distinctive shingles rash can appear virtually anywhere on the
body, but it frequently arises on a single side of the torso, face, or legs. While the skin eruption can be unsightly, the pain associated with shingles can be excruciating.

In most cases, the rash and the accompanying pain will disappear in three to four weeks, but in some cases, the pain can linger for weeks, months, or even years. This condition, called post-herpetic neuralgia, affects 40 percent of shingles sufferers over the age of 60. The pain, often described as a stabbing, burning, or shock-like sensation, can be debilitating. In some cases, the skin is so sensitive that even the lightest touch can be very painful.

Although the exact cause is unknown, experts speculate that it is likely the result of nerve damage caused by the virus. After a case of shingles, the affected nerves may become more excitable, firing off pain signals more easily and more frequently. In some individuals with post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain is so severe that it interferes with their normal daily life. More than 60 percent of patients with the condition
experience difficulty sleeping, and half say that their enjoyment of life is significantly diminished.

In May 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first vaccine to prevent shingles for adults aged 60 and over. Clinical trials showed that use of the vaccine reduced the risk of developing shingles by half, and decreased the likelihood of developing post-herpetic neuralgia by two-thirds.

While the vaccine may help prevent shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia, it isn't considered to be a treatment for either condition. Patients with active cases of shingles shouldn't be vaccinated until their symptoms have resolved. In the meantime, prescription antiviral medications can help reduce the severity of shingles, as well as the likelihood of developing post-herpetic neuralgia. Although these drugs were previously believed to work best when started within 72 hours of developing symptoms, newevidence has shown that they can be beneficial even when taken later in the course of the illness.

In addition to antiviral drugs, prescription pain medications are an important part of the medical management of shingles. Recent research suggests that aggressive pain control, started early in the treatmentperiod, can reduce the likelihood that patients will develop post-herpetic neuralgia.

In the past, many patients turned to over-the-counter remedies or prescription drugs for relief, with varying results. In 2004, a new drug called Lyrica received FDA approval for the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia. In clinical studies of patients with post-herpetic neuralgia, individuals taking the drug experienced significant reductions in pain as early as a week after beginning treatment. Over a period of several weeks, up to half of patients taking the highest approved dose reported at least a 50 percent reduction in pain.

MOTION SICKNESS
Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting signals from the inner ear, eyes, and other parts of the body that sense motion. For example, when you feel turbulence on a plane, your eyes don't see what's happening to cause the motion. Your brain gets one message from your inner ear, which senses the turbulence, but an opposing message from your eyes, which see only the apparently unmoving interior of the plane. The same thing happens when you're sitting in the backseat of a car.

You may be able to prevent or at least reduce motion sickness by making sure your eyes see what your inner ear feels. When riding in a car, either drive or sit in the front seat. On board an airplane, choose a seat over the wings where you're least likely to feel motion. Ask for a window seat and look out. If you're traveling by ship, request a cabin in the forward or middle of the ship or on the upper deck; spend as much time as possible on deck watching the horizon.

Acupressure wristbands are the modern version of an old Chinese fisherman's remedy of stimulating the acupressure points that control nausea. They have plastic pegs that press on acupressure points on the inner surfaces of the wrists. Proper placement of the wristbands is critical so follow package directions carefully.

Another useful remedy is ginger, which is effective for motion sickness and doesn't cause drowsiness as a side effect which some prescription drugs do. Mix a half teaspoon of ginger powder in a glass of water and drink it 20 minutes before travel or take two capsules of powdered ginger. Pack some ginger snaps or ginger candy and keep ginger ale on hand when possible to help quell mild nausea caused by motion sickness.

BENEFITS OF ECHINACEA
When you feel a cold coming on, reach for echinacea (Echinacea purpurea). Its antibiotic and antiviral properties make this native American plant an ideal first-line treatment for colds and flu, sore throat, and other simple infections. It can also help you through times of low resistance by enhancing the immune system. Available in tincture, capsule, tablet and extract form, look for combination echinacea products (containing both augustifolia and purpurea species) standardized to 4 percent echinacosides. For best effectiveness, begin taking echinacea when symptoms first appear and continue until the illness runs its course. Echinacea should not be used continuously for more than 10 days. Those with autoimmune diseases should use it cautiously, and for the shortest period possible. Try one dropperful of tincture in water four times a day, or two capsules of freeze-dried extract four times a day. Children under 10 can take half the adult dosage.

PESTICIDES IN A THIRD OF FOODS
Nearly a third of UK food and drink, including fruit and vegetables contains pesticides a government advisory body has said.
The Pesticides Residue Committee found traces exceeded the legal limits in 1.7% of cases, which was up a third on the year before, due to more exotic food being tested. The harmful chemicals found in food are used in the manufacture of products including packaging, detergent, cosmetics and pesticides.
Experts said the findings could explain why all 352 blood samples provided in a different study were found to be contaminated with chemicals.
Although none of the chemicals in the quantities detected is thought to be dangerous the WWF is concerned about the possible effect of the different chemicals combining in the body. The amount of money spent in Britain on ethical or green products has been steadily increasing for several years. This doesn't just involve food but also travel, finance, cosmetics and even home appliances.
The manufacture of clothing in third world countries and the ethics involved has been a political issue for some time now, with the media highlighting concerns about sweatshop labour being used in developing countries.
Ethical or Fairtrade foods have become a success with more organic shops and restaurants opening up around the country. Supermarkets have also got in on the act by increasing the amount of this type of produce on their shelves. It's a strategy that appears to be paying off as, according to research, sales are increasing. Supermarket shoppers seem willing to spend more on quality fruit and vegetables. But, what about clothing?
A number of clothing manufacturers have received bad press in the past and are at last publicly addressing these issues. Consumer awareness has also increased and shoppers are looking closely at labels on clothing and investigating the origin of the goods.
At the top end of the market fashion designer Stella McCartney, for example, refuses to use leather, furs or other animal products in her clothing range. High street stores and online retailers have also introduced ethical clothing ranges. Of course, these changes are taking place slowly and still only account for a small percentage of overall sales.
One reason is the cost. Ethically produced clothing is more expensive to manufacture. Research, finding suitable materials and appropriate factories all adds to the price. There is also the cost of marketing and promoting these ranges, which usually means a higher price than 'unethical' products. However, as these products become more readily available, demand should increase and prices will fall.

INSOMNIA
It is estimated that insomnia affects about one-third of the adult population worldwide, and for most of us, the quality of our sleep will decrease at some point in our lives. The pressures of everyday life, stress at work, money worries or illness within the family are all potential causes of sleepless nights. While different types of insomnia have different causes, most people can find relief through the following, regardless of the source of their sleeplessness.

Establish a consistent bedtime routine, and try to go to bed at the same time every night.
Get plenty of exercise during the day. You may not feel like it, but the more energy you expend during the day, the sleepier you will feel at bedtime.
Reduce or eliminate your intake of caffeine, stimulants and alcohol. Even when these are consumed early in the day, they can affect your sleep pattern.
Avoid large meals late in the evening.
Learn and practice a relaxation technique regularly. Breathingexercises, meditation and yoga are good examples.
Don't obsess about not sleeping. Worrying about not getting to sleep can produce a vicious circle. Instead, remind yourself that while sleeplessness is troublesome, it isn't life-threatening.

RISK TO EYESIGHT FOR OBESE

Obese people have double the risk of losing their sight due to the fact that their weight increases their chance of developing certain conditions, a report has said.
The Royal National Institute of the Blind said the obese risk cataracts and age related macular degenaration, the most common cause of sight loss. One groups recommendation can seem like good advice until you find another opinion telling you exactly the opposite.
The Food Standards Agency in the UK has set a target of reducing the average salt intake of adults to 6g a day by the year 2010. This is backed up by the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrion (SACN) which is an independent expert committee that advises the FSA and the Department of Health.
In 1994, the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy (COMA) recommended reducing salt intake from 9g a day to 6g, based on evidence of a link between high salt intake and high blood pressure. In 2003 this evidence was reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition to consider if the previous recommendations to reduce salt intakes were still valid.SACN concluded that the evidence of a link between salt intake and blood pressure had increased since 1994. They said that high levels of salt raise the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. SACN then recommended that salt intake be further reduced to 6g a day.
Good advice? Not so, according to research in summer 2005 from the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands.Professor Deiderick Grobbee, a cardiovascular specialist and an author of the report, said "If people stick within a range of moderate sodium intake, which we normally get from salt in our food, there is no material variation to the risk of mortality."
The research, known as the Rotterdam Study, involved almost 8000 people in their fifties and above, and found that as long as their salt intake was moderate - no more than 16g a day - the effect on blood pressure was insignificant. It was only if consumption rose to between 21g and 27g a day the risk of stroke increased.
These results, however, were condemned by supporters of salt reduction.Prof Graham McGregor, a cardiovascular specialist at St George's Hospital, London, chairman of Consensus Action on Salt and Health, said "You will always find scientists that will go against the main body of research.Chronic ingestion of the amount of salt that we eat, slowly puts up our blood pressure and is largely responsible for many strokes and heart attacks and that's why the five to six grams a day target was set."
Clear as mud, then.

SUNSCREEN TO COMBAT SKIN CANCER
A group of scientists at Bath University in the UK say they have developed a sunscreen that will actively repair sunburnt skin and may even help prevent skin cancer.
Like conventional sunscreens, the lotion filters the sun's harmful rays. That's Nigeria, phising central!
Many people assume that when they delete data from their hard disc it's gone forever. Not true. Deleted files can still be embedded in the hard disk until they are overwritten with other data, and could be retrieved by those with the relevant knowledge.
The reporter travelled to Nigeria and purchased a hard disk for a few pounds. A computer expert was then able to retrieve the personal details of a man living in the UK. The reporter turned up at the man's house and was able to tell him important information, including credit card and bank account numbers. The man was understandably shocked at the revelation.
Apparently, some companies shipping these computers abroad are more thorough than others when it comes to reformatting the hard disk.
Official advice is to use software that overwrites the information several times, which puts it beyond the use of hackers. When acid from your stomach leaks back up through your oesophagus (gullet) this irritates the delicate lining of the oesophagus and can result in permanent damage.

The main sympton of acid reflux is heartburn. This is usually a burning pain behind your breastbone and typically happens after a meal when your stomach is full or when you lie down, which allows acid to flow upwards more easily. Those who smoke, are overweight or pregnant tend to experience more frequent heartburn. In more complicated cases it may lead to ulcers in the oesophagus and in the worst cases, cancer of the oesophogus. The occasional bout of heartburn may be nothing to worry about, but more persistent bouts, say more than once a week could indicate acid reflux.

It is widely believed that acid reflux syndrome is related to a person's diet. Junk food and processed food may not be digested properly and this can cause acidic waste, which in turn can cause stomach spasms. This creates stomach gas which opens the valve between the stomach and oesophagus which allows the acidic content to return to the oesophagus.

Most medications will relieve the symptoms without actually curing the condition. Before choosing a medication to rid yourself of the problem you should assess what food you eat and your lifestyle. Studies have shown that foods such as chocolate, peppermint, spearmint, sugar, onions, garlic, spicy foods, coffee and alcohol can all aggravate acid reflux. Eliminating or at least reducing these items from your diet will have a positive effect.

Also, avoid overeating and having a large amount of food in your stomach. Small, regular meals are a far better option. It is also recommended to have your last meal about three hours before bedtime and sleeping with your head raised six inches can help in reducing the number of acid reflux attacks that you may have.

As with anything medical, you should discuss your options with your doctor. But, simple changes to your lifestyle and diet could reduce the need for medication and improve your health.

HOODIA SLIMMING PRODUCTS

A consumer advice programme on BBC television called Old Dogs, New Tricks hosted by Esther Rantzen and Lynn Faulds Wood - well known in the UK for exposing the tactics of dodgy businesses and scam products - turned its attention to hoodia slimming products.
A company called Elixir of Life, based in Jersey, advertise miracle slimming pills called Inferno, which promise to 'pop fat cells like bubble wrap', and Hoodislim, made from a South American cactus called hoodia supposedly an appetite suppressant.
The ladies travel to Jersey to try and find the company but only find a distribution warehouse, who won't reveal where the owners of the company are based. The only other clue is a picture of a 'doctor' in a white coat in the brochure, guaranteeing that the pills work.
Both sets of pills contain herbal ingredients, so they are taken to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew for analysis. Neither of the pills contain anything that could have the effect promised in the brochure and one of the UK's top diet experts, Dr Susan Jebb, emphasises there is no miracle way to lose weight.
The man in the white coat is found. A Dr Brian Whitton, he is a chemist who manufactures the pills and is paid a consultancy fee and allows his photo to be used to endorse the pills. He eventually reveals the owner of the company to be Robin Brown, who runs a family business in Lincolnshire called Healthy Marketing & Fulfillment Ltd. They deny being Elixir of Life but admit they are a customer of theirs.
After Esther's visit to Dr Whitton he contacts the company and asks them to remove his photo from their catalogues.
The programme concludes that there are dozens more hoodia products available via mail order and the internet but, as clinical trials are just underway, there's no evidence that taking hoodia would have any real benefit.

Copyright 2006 robbiex
